What does a Piedmont hillside move need that a flat-street move does not?

As of October 2026, a Piedmont hillside move with Ontrack Moving® can need one thing most flat-street moves do not: a shuttle, a smaller vehicle running between the truck and the house where the street or driveway is too steep. We plan it at the survey, with roughly 50 to 70 percent more loading or unloading time at that end.

The truck leaves from our Hayward yard at 22950 Clawiter Rd. Ontrack Moving® is the carrier, not a broker: USDOT #2551548 with a DOT inspection record that exceeds the national average, California household goods carrier permit CAL-T190721, and 4.9/5 from 2,847+ reviews.

Why does a shuttle add 50 to 70 percent more loading time at one end of a Piedmont move?

Because it is loading twice. With a shuttle, Ontrack Moving® movers carry your things from the house into the small vehicle, drive it to the big truck, and load them a second time, so loading (or unloading) at that end runs roughly 50 to 70 percent longer than it would with the truck at the curb.

Piedmont's hillside neighborhoods, on the steep slopes of eastern Piedmont, are characterized by “winding narrow streets and multi-level hillside homes”. Not every address there needs a shuttle. The angle at your street and your driveway decides it, which is why we settle it at the survey instead of guessing on the phone.

  • Planned at the survey. The survey sets whether a shuttle runs, at which end, and how many movers the job needs to carry the extra handling.
  • Its own line on the written estimate.
  • Show us the hard parts. Point out the steepest stretch of driveway, the tight turn into your street and any long stair run from the curb, so the plan covers them.

Which Piedmont streets keep heavy trucks out, and what does that mean on moving day?

Piedmont's City Code, Chapter 11 bars commercial vehicles over five tons from Highland Avenue, Oakland Avenue between Grand and Scenic, and St. James Drive between Park Boulevard and LaSalle, unless the truck is reaching a destination to load or unload by the shortest deviation from the nearest truck route or non-prohibited street (Sec. 11.3(C)).

The truck routes

Sec. 11.5(E) names three: Moraga Avenue across the city, Grand Avenue between the city limits, and Oakland Avenue from Grand Avenue west to the city limit. Trucks may use other Piedmont streets to reach individual properties for local deliveries (Transportation Element).

The street widths

About half of the city's streets are “Marginally Adequate” in width, meaning 20 to 35 feet curb to curb, and a few segments have 15 MPH limits due to narrow road conditions. On a 30-foot street with cars parked on both sides, travel lanes are reduced to just eight feet in each direction (Transportation Element).

Can a moving truck park on a steep Piedmont street?

Two parts of the City Code apply. On a street steeper than three percent, Sec. 11.55 requires a parked vehicle to have its brakes set and its wheels turned against the curb or otherwise blocked. Reserving the curb is separate: Sec. 11.59 provides temporary No Parking signs, used under rules the City Council adopts.

What we could not find published is the procedure, fee or lead time for signs on a move day. So ask the City first: the City lists (510) 420-3040 for street use permits. Then tell us at the survey where the truck can stand, so the shuttle question and the parking question get answered together.

City Code citations are to the Chapter 11 text the City posts online, revised through February 14, 2003. Check with the City for any later change.

How many movers, at what hourly rate, for a local Piedmont move?

As of October 2026, Ontrack Moving® bills local Piedmont moves by the hour:

  • Two movers: starting at $175 per hour, 3-hour minimum
  • Three movers: starting at $235 per hour, 3-hour minimum
  • Four movers: starting at $295 per hour, 4-hour minimum

Valuation options for your belongings are set out in your written estimate. Everything else a local move includes is on our residential moving page.

Final charges will be based on actual labor time, materials used, access conditions, scope changes, waiting time, and any additional services requested or required to complete the move.

Is Piedmont its own city or part of Oakland?

Piedmont is its own city: a charter city of about 11,000 residents on 1.7 square miles in the Oakland Hills, per the City's website, incorporated in 1907 and surrounded by Oakland (2024 General Plan). Ontrack Moving® moves households inside the City of Piedmont from its Hayward yard.

Moving on Piedmont Avenue, the Oakland street, or anywhere else in Oakland? That is our Oakland movers page. Leaving the state from either one starts with our long-distance moving service, priced by survey rather than by the hour.

What Piedmont households ask before the truck comes up the hill

Piedmont's City Code allows temporary No Parking signs under rules adopted by the City Council (Sec. 11.59), but Ontrack Moving® has not found a published procedure, fee or lead time for move-day signs. The City lists (510) 420-3040 for street use permits; call before you settle the date, and tell us at the survey where the truck can stand.

Piedmont's City Code bars commercial vehicles over five tons from Highland Avenue except to reach a destination for loading or unloading, by the shortest deviation from the nearest truck route or non-prohibited street (Sec. 11.3(C)). Whether the big truck or an Ontrack Moving® shuttle reaches the door is decided at the survey.

Ontrack Moving® plans roughly 50 to 70 percent more loading or unloading time at the end that needs the shuttle, because the crew loads twice: once into the small vehicle, once into the truck. The shuttle is set at the survey, staffed with the right number of movers, and listed as its own line on the written estimate.

No. A long-distance move that starts in Piedmont gets a survey-based quote from Ontrack Moving®, on-site or virtual, and flat rates are available. Truck space, distance, access and the season set the price. Valuation options for your belongings are set out in your written estimate.

Yes. Ontrack Moving® keeps customer storage at the Hayward yard, 22950 Clawiter Rd. Your furniture waits there between closing dates, and the company that loaded it in Piedmont is the one that brings it to the next home, with no second mover added in between.
