6 Common Address Change Mistakes
Most people remember to forward their mail but overlook these costly errors.
Only filing USPS forwarding and stopping there
USPS forwarding expires after 12 months, periodicals are forwarded for only 60 days, and USPS Marketing Mail is not forwarded. Packages sent by Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, and USPS Ground Advantage are forwarded free, but each account still needs its own direct update.
Waiting until after the move to update your DMV address
California and Arizona both require an address update within 10 days. Missing the deadline can result in fines or issues with your registration and insurance.
Forgetting to update your auto insurance before the move
Your auto insurance rate is tied to your zip code. If you file a claim from an address your insurer does not have on file, your insurer may question or delay the claim, so confirm your policy terms with them.
Not updating your voter registration
You may not be able to vote at your new polling location until you re-register. California requires registration 15 days before an election, though California also offers Conditional Voter Registration, which lets you register and vote at a county elections office, polling place, or vote center within 14 days of an election, including Election Day. Arizona requires 29 days.
Skipping medical records transfers
If you need to see a new doctor, they will ask for your medical history. Requesting records after the fact can take weeks. Start the transfer before you move.
