AVOID THESE PITFALLS

6 Common Address Change Mistakes

Most people remember to forward their mail but overlook these costly errors.

1

Only filing USPS forwarding and stopping there

USPS forwarding expires after 12 months and does not cover packages, marketing mail, or most subscriptions. Every account needs a direct update.

2

Waiting until after the move to update your DMV address

California and Arizona both require an address update within 10 days. Missing the deadline can result in fines or issues with your registration and insurance.

3

Forgetting to update your auto insurance before the move

Your auto insurance rate is tied to your zip code. If you file a claim from an address your insurer does not have on file, it can delay or void the claim.

4

Not updating your voter registration

You cannot vote at your new polling location until you re-register. California requires registration 15 days before an election. Arizona requires 29 days.

5

Skipping medical records transfers

If you need to see a new doctor, they will ask for your medical history. Requesting records after the fact can take weeks. Start the transfer before you move.

6

Leaving sensitive mail going to your old address

Bank statements, tax documents, and medical records sent to an address where you no longer live create an identity theft risk. Update financial accounts first.

Address Change Timeline: When to Do What

Spread the work across several weeks so you are not rushing to update everything on moving day.

1

4-6 Weeks Before Your Move

Research utility providers at your new address. Notify your landlord or HOA of your move-out date. Gather account numbers for all banks, insurance policies, and subscriptions. Create a spreadsheet or use this checklist to track which accounts you have updated.

2

2-4 Weeks Before Your Move

File your USPS change of address online or at the post office. Update your driver's license and vehicle registration. Notify banks, credit cards, and insurance providers. Register to vote at your new address. Contact your employer's HR department for payroll updates.

3

1 Week Before Your Move

Schedule utility disconnection at your current address and connection at your new address. Update delivery addresses for Amazon, subscriptions, and meal kits. Notify your children's school and transfer records. Update your pharmacy and request prescription transfers.

4

Moving Day

Confirm USPS mail forwarding is active. Do a final check of your old mailbox. Take meter readings for utilities at both addresses. Leave your new address with a trusted neighbor at your old home in case any important mail arrives.

5

First Week After Your Move

Update remaining accounts you may have missed: loyalty programs, gym memberships, professional licenses, alumni associations. Check for forwarded mail to identify any accounts you forgot. Update your address on social media profiles and personal websites.

State-Specific Requirements: California and Arizona

Each state has its own rules for driver's license updates, voter registration, and utility transfers. Here are the key differences for our two service regions.

California

  • CA DMV: Update your address within 10 days at dmv.ca.gov. No fee for address-only changes. You can update online without visiting an office.
  • Voter Registration: Re-register online at registertovote.ca.gov with your new address. Must register at least 15 days before an election.
  • Utilities: PG&E serves most Bay Area customers. Contact them at pge.com to transfer or start service. Allow 3-5 business days for new connections.
  • Vehicle Registration: If moving within California, update your address with DMV. If moving from Arizona to California, you have 20 days to register your vehicle.
  • Auto Insurance: California requires minimum liability coverage. Your rates may change when you move to a new zip code. Notify your insurer before moving day.

Arizona

  • AZ MVD: Update your address within 10 days at servicearizona.com. Free for address changes. Arizona licenses do not expire until age 65.
  • Voter Registration: Update at azsos.gov or through ServiceArizona. Must register at least 29 days before an election.
  • Utilities: APS (Arizona Public Service) or SRP (Salt River Project) provides electricity depending on your area. Set up service online at least 2 weeks before move-in.
  • Vehicle Registration: If moving from California to Arizona, register your vehicle within 15 days. Emissions testing is required in Maricopa County.
  • Auto Insurance: Arizona requires minimum liability coverage. Rates in the Phoenix metro are typically lower than the Bay Area. Update your insurer before the move.

Frequently Asked Questions About Changing Your Address

Online submissions take effect within 7-10 business days. USPS will forward first-class mail to your new address for 12 months and periodical mail for 60 days.

USPS forwards first-class mail for 12 months and periodicals (magazines, newspapers) for 60 days. Standard mail (marketing, catalogs) is not forwarded. After 12 months, undeliverable first-class mail is returned to the sender with your new address. You can extend forwarding for 6 additional months by filing a second request before the original expires.

Yes. Both California and Arizona require you to update your driver's license within 10 days of moving. In California, submit a change of address online through the CA DMV website or visit a DMV office. In Arizona, update your address online through ServiceArizona.com or at any MVD office. Failure to update can result in fines or missed legal notices.

Filing a USPS change of address online costs $1.10 for identity verification. Filing in person at a post office is free. Most other address updates (banks, insurance, DMV) have no fee. California DMV charges no fee for an address-only change. Arizona MVD address changes are also free when done online.

Forgetting to update your address can cause missed bills (leading to late fees and credit score damage), lapsed insurance coverage, missed jury duty notices, undelivered tax documents, and packages sent to the wrong location. In a worst case, sensitive mail delivered to your old address could lead to identity theft. Use a checklist to update all accounts systematically.
