Why Pool Tables Require Specialized Moving
A pool table is not regular furniture. It is a precision playing surface where a fraction of an inch matters. The slate bed, typically 3/4" to 1" thick Italian or Brazilian slate, can crack if stood on edge or dropped. The felt stretches and wrinkles if removed incorrectly. The frame and pockets must be reassembled to exact specifications.

Rails, pockets, and leg assemblies are removed, labeled, and protected separately. Proper disassembly prevents rail warping and pocket tearing that occurs when tables are moved assembled.
Precision Leveling
After reassembly, we level the table using machinist levels. Leg levelers are adjusted, slate seams are shimmed, and the playing surface is verified flat for accurate ball roll.

Our Pool Table Moving Process
Every pool table move follows the same careful sequence, from initial assessment through final leveling. Rushing any step risks damage to the slate, felt, or frame.
Assessment
We identify your table type, brand, and condition. We assess access at both locations including doorways, stairs, turns, and ceiling heights. A standard 8-foot slate table weighs 700-1,000 lbs, so access planning is critical. We also note if the felt needs replacement after the move.
Disassembly
Rails and pockets are removed first, with all hardware bagged and labeled. Slate sections are unscrewed from the frame and lifted off using proper technique. The frame is disassembled into manageable sections. Components are documented so reassembly follows the original configuration.
Slate Handling and Crating
Each slate section is wrapped in moving blankets and placed in padded crates or secured flat on dollies. Slate travels with full support and cushioning against vibration, either flat or padded and strapped upright. For long-distance moves or high-value antique tables, custom wood crating is available to provide additional protection.
Transport
Components are loaded into our padded trucks with slate sections secured flat and cushioned against vibration. Frame pieces, rails, and pockets are wrapped and positioned to prevent shifting. For interstate moves, we hold USDOT #2551548 authority for legal long-distance transport.
Reassembly
The frame is reassembled in the new location following the documented configuration. Slate sections are positioned, aligned at the seams, and secured. Rails and pockets are reattached using the original hardware. Bolts are tightened to snug, even torque to reduce rail movement during play.
Precision Leveling
Using machinist levels, we check the playing surface with machinist levels in all directions. Leg levelers are adjusted for floor variations. Slate seams are shimmed and filled if needed. This final step supports accurate ball roll and is essential for serious play.
Refelting Coordination
Many pool tables benefit from new felt after a move, especially if the existing cloth is worn, stretched, or damaged during removal. Ontrack Moving does not perform refelting in house, and can refer you to independent felt specialists in both the Bay Area and Phoenix who can refelt your table after we complete reassembly.
