Why hot tubs need specialists

Hot Tub Moving Logistics

Hot tubs are deceptively difficult to move. Even a small spa weighs 300-400 lbs empty, with larger models exceeding 1,000 lbs. Add narrow side yards, fenced backyards, and 220V electrical connections, and you need a team that understands spa-specific challenges.

Weight by Spa Size (Empty)

2-3 Person: 300-400 lbs 4-6 Person: 500-700 lbs 7-8 Person: 800-1,000+ lbs

Water Weight Matters

A filled hot tub can weigh 3,000-6,000 lbs. The spa must be completely drained before we arrive. We recommend draining 24-48 hours in advance and using a shop vac to remove residual water from jets and pumps.

Electrical Requirements

Most hot tubs run on 220V/240V dedicated circuits. A licensed electrician must disconnect the power before move day and reconnect at the new location. We provide electrician referrals if needed.

Access Challenges

Side yards, narrow gates, fenced backyards, and elevated decks create access challenges. We assess all pathways during your estimate and recommend solutions including gate removal or crane services when ground access is not possible.

How it works

Our Hot Tub Moving Process

A successful hot tub move requires coordination between you, licensed tradespeople, and our moving crew. Here is how we approach each project.

1

Site Assessment

We evaluate access at both locations: gate widths, pathway clearance, stairs, deck height, and any obstacles. If ground-level access is not feasible, we discuss crane lift options. You will receive a detailed estimate based on the actual conditions.

2

Pre-Move Preparation (Your Responsibility)

Before move day: drain the spa completely (24-48 hours ahead), have a licensed electrician disconnect the power, remove any attached steps or accessories, and leave the cover in place. We can provide electrician and plumber referrals if needed.

3

Disconnect Coordination

Hot tubs require licensed professionals for electrical (220V/240V circuits) and sometimes plumbing work. We do not perform this work ourselves, but we can provide referrals to electricians and plumbers we have worked with on previous hot tub moves.

4

Move Day Transport

Our crew arrives with spa dollies, furniture dollies, heavy-duty straps, and moving blankets. We carefully tip the spa onto its side (if needed for doorway clearance), secure it for transport, and place it at the new location according to your specifications.

5

Crane Services (When Needed)

When fences, walls, or structures block ground access, we coordinate crane services to lift the hot tub over obstacles and place it directly on the pad. This is common for fenced backyards, rooftop installations, and properties with no side yard access.

6

Placement and Reconnect Coordination

We position the spa on your prepared pad (concrete, pavers, or reinforced deck). Reconnection requires a licensed electrician for 220V hookup and potentially a plumber for dedicated water lines. Schedule these professionals to arrive after our crew completes placement.

Protecting your investment

Special Considerations

Hot tubs require specific handling based on season, storage needs, and the complexity of your property. We address these factors during your free estimate to prevent damage and delays.

Winterization for Cold-Weather Moves

Residual water in pumps, jets, and plumbing lines can freeze and crack components. After draining, a shop vac or blower removes remaining water. Full winterization is recommended if the spa will be stored or not reconnected immediately.

Gate and Fence Removal

Narrow gates are often the primary obstacle. With your permission, we can coordinate temporary gate or fence panel removal to create adequate clearance. Panels are reinstalled after the spa passes through.

Pad Preparation at Destination

Hot tubs require a level, stable surface: concrete pad, reinforced pavers, or a deck rated for the filled weight (3,000-6,000+ lbs). Verify your destination pad is ready before move day.

Cover Protection

Leave the hot tub cover in place during transport. It protects the interior from debris, scratches, and weather. We strap the cover securely to prevent shifting during the move.

Pre-Move Checklist

  • Drain hot tub completely (24-48 hours before move)
  • Schedule licensed electrician to disconnect 220V power
  • Remove attached steps, handrails, and accessories
  • Leave cover on to protect interior
  • Clear pathway from spa to truck (both locations)
  • Verify destination pad is ready and level
  • Schedule electrician for reconnect at new location

Common questions

Hot Tub Moving FAQs

Hot tub moving costs depend on several factors: the weight and size of the spa, access conditions at both locations (stairs, gates, narrow paths), distance traveled, and whether crane services are needed. A standard 400-lb portable spa with ground-level access costs less than an 800-lb unit requiring crane lift over a fence. Contact us for a free on-site estimate tailored to your specific situation.

Hot tubs require licensed electricians for 220V/240V disconnect and reconnect, and plumbers for dedicated water line work. We do not perform electrical or plumbing work ourselves, but we can provide referrals to licensed professionals we have worked with on previous hot tub moves. Coordinate the disconnect before our arrival and reconnect after placement.

Yes. When ground-level access is not possible, we coordinate crane services to lift the hot tub over fences, walls, or structures. For narrow gates, we can often coordinate temporary gate or fence panel removal with your permission. During your free estimate, we assess all access points and recommend the safest approach for your property.

Empty hot tub weights vary significantly by model. Portable 2-3 person spas typically weigh 300-400 lbs empty. Standard 4-6 person hot tubs weigh 500-700 lbs. Large 7-8 person spas can weigh 800-1,000+ lbs even when drained. We assess the weight during your estimate and bring appropriate equipment including spa dollies, furniture dollies, and strapping systems.

Yes, the hot tub must be completely drained before we arrive. A filled hot tub can weigh 3,000-6,000 lbs, making it impossible to move safely. Drain the water 24-48 hours before the move, disconnect power with a licensed electrician, and leave the cover on to protect the interior. We can provide draining guidance during your estimate consultation.

Yes, but winterization is critical for cold-weather moves. Residual water in pumps, jets, and plumbing lines can freeze and crack components. After draining, a shop vac or blower should be used to remove remaining water from the lines. If the hot tub will be stored or not reconnected immediately, full winterization is recommended. Ask about winterization coordination during your estimate.
